VERTICAL RACE BENASQUE – Sunday, 26 July 2009 (NEW RACE

High mountain race covering a distance of 14.5 kilometres and a positive accumulated altitude difference of 1,1400 meters with an in-line start from Ampriu. The finish is also at Ampriu at an altitude of 1,900 metros. This is the only race of the GORE-TEX® SERIES – VERTICAL RUNNING 2007 which starts and finishes at the same place.

The race route has some very beautiful panoramic views and goes around the Olla del Ampriu, passing by some of the surrounding peaks.

The route leaves from the bottom of the valley and passes Cerler peak at 2,349m, the Ampriu pass, Gallinero peak at 2,732m, Cibollés at 2.749m and the Basibé pass before returning directly to Ampriu.

The race has several different sections: in the first stretch the terrain is rocky and covered with alpine vegetation as far as Pico Cerler, it then continues along some easier slopes and a number of technical high mountain paths at some points, which follow the crest of Gallinero, Cibollés and Cap de la Pala del Estany. The return is very fast and direct and follows the paths that lead back to Ampriu.

The current record holders are Mario Llorens with a time of 1:43:22 (2007) and Mónica Ardid with a time of 02:17:12 (2008).

Those who wish to accompany the athletes can use two installations free of charge to allow them to see the competitors pass by and they can then cheer on the runners at the Ampriu pass at 2,258 meters and at the Basibé pass at 2,277 meters.
